The Ulster American Folk Park

16th Apr 2025

The P6/7 class trip to The Ulster American Folk Park was the perfect culmination of their World Around Us topic on Famine. The day was filled with lots of experiences that brought history to life. They visited a poignant famine cottage, gaining insight into the harsh living conditions of the time, and learned about education during the famine era at a replica schoolhouse. The class was also fascinated by the traditional craftsmanship of the iron smith, who demonstrated how horse shoes were made. A highlight of the trip was boarding a replica of a famine ship, which would have carried many Irish emigrants to America in search of a better life. The day ended on a sweeter note with a visit to O'Doherty's sweet shop, where they enjoyed traditional treats measured out from jars on old-fashioned scales.
